  1. I have to say I’m disappointed. No Carney on the bench? No place for O’Kelly from the start. Will he be used for more than 8 minutes? I’m sure the line-out will be better, but I’m not convinced.

  2. Fence I agree with you but its certainly an improvement.

If Trimble held his place it would have been a disgrace. Hickie had to come back in and will be his last game in an Irish Jersey.

Unfortunate for Carney after all the work he’s put in but at least the bench is attacking minded and there is a few impact players

  3. Tammy Winnet had a hit with ‘Stand by your man’ several years ago,so let us say a little prayer and hope that Eddies re-release, ‘Stand by your men’ is equally successful.

    Good Luck lads.

  4. Jim,

based on the last 3 results we could do with tammy in the starting lineup! We need something? Have to agree with FENCE, I’m not sure leaving OKelly out is the right decision.

I’m a big Eddie fan – but either it’s electric shock therapy here or a bit of catch yourself on? Answers on a post card to Pat Rabbitte.

  5. i wonder what alan quinlan has done ? he must have pictures of Eddie in an uncompromising position or something …

  6. A Chara Rambling Man
    – me thinks Eddie is in that postion at the moment – unless Tammy and her back up band come to town with a miracle!

  7. I think O’Kelly’s mobility is the main reason he doesn’t get in the second row.
I do think another couple of change were needed though. One in the back row and one in the 3/4s. Carney could even have started with Horgan moving to 12.
Eddie has shown phenomenal faith in his starters, so lets hope it pays off.

  8. Traditionally, Eddie’s approach has always been “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Now it seems to be “Even if it is broke, don’t fix it either.”

I will of course support the team with every fibre of my being, but three misfires in a row doesn’t inspire confidence as they face the form team in the pool.

All but one of this team has been in the starting XV of at least one game so far. Ten have started all three. I don’t have the figures to hand but a fair few of them have played every single minute of every game Ireland have been involved in.

Why did Eddie even bother naming the bench? It’s hardly likely he’s going to make any meaningful use of it.

  9. Sometimes it’s hard to be a rugby coach
Putting all your faith in just one team
    But you’ll have bad times
    And they’ll have worse times
With a game plan they don’t understand.

But if you’re sure of them
    You’ll forgive them
And make sure they start the next game.
    And if you trust them
    Be proud of them
Cos after all they’re just a team.

    Stand by your team
    Make sure it never changes
For the World Cup and the Six Nations
    Unless someone pulls a hamstring.

    Stand by your team
And show the world your faith in them
Keep giving all the caps you can
    Stand by your team.

  10. Nice one Gerry 🙂

Still, I’m going to try and focus on the positives; Murphy is on, finally. Erm… I’m running low. Still, we’re due a big game, right?

  11. Mal O’Kelly is not starting because he is barely able to move in the loose. He would be massacred by the Argentinian pack… The mind may be willing, but the body ain’t.

Trimble’s demotion was a no-brainer. And for all his “cometh the hour, cometh the man” guff, Eddie would obviously never have picked Murphy if Dempsey was fit.

The back row remains a weak link. It pains me to say it, but Wallace has been useless at this World Cup. He is non-existant at the breakdown, has not carried more than five significant balls in total thus far, and has been reckless with his discipline…

Quinlan should have started at 7. (He has done before for Munster, effectively at that.) He would have offered more fight at the breakdown, and a fantastic option in the line out. Which could not have hurt… Plus, with Wallace on the bench Eddie would have possessed a (potentially) superb impact sub whilst chasing late tries and bonus points.

By not even featuring in this World Cup, Alan Quinlan has been given an insulting send off to his international career… Intrinsically ironic when you consider he was the man who pretty much saved Irish arses at the World Cup four years ago… If only I could remember who the opposition were that day… Nope, it’s gone.

  12. Gerry,
agree fully with your ‘traditionally Eddie… etc’. Fully correct if it’s broke he wont fix it?!! Hickie’s in for trimble – just in on the wireless.. missed the rest.

    regarding the songwriting eh?!

  13. Check out this article on my blog. It’s a preview on the upcoming match between Argentina and Ireland. And don’t forget to leave your comments as well.

  14. Hard to see how all those players from Cork Constipation can help. And how did we end up with so many Munster family on the team? Jeez. I say: put on A.N. Other right from the start! As for the bloke from St. Mary’s College – are we playing school kids now? No wonder we’re shit.
