Reddan to start against the French

Ireland pick Reddan for France (Planet Rugby)

At last, some changes by Eddie. Three, in fact. Peter Stringer is the biggest casualty following Ireland’s abysmal showing against Georgia. He drops right out of the squad, to be replaced by Eoin Reddan. Boss will be the replacement scrum half, obviously.

Jerry Flannery will replace the injured Best in the pack. The final alteration sees Andrew Trimble replacing Hickie on the wing, as the Leinster man is struggling for fitness after suffering a bruised knee against the Georgians… However, there is still no place for Alan Quinlan on the bench. The team:

Ireland: 15 Girvan Dempsey, 14 Shane Horgan, 13 Brian O’Driscoll (c), 12 Gordon D’Arcy, 11 Andrew Trimble, 10 Ronan O’Gara, 9 Eoin Reddan, 8 Denis Leamy, 7 David Wallace, 6 Simon Easterby, 5 Paul O’Connell, 4 Donncha O’Callaghan, 3 John Hayes, 2 Jerry Flannery, 1 Marcus Horan.

Replacements: 16 Frankie Sheahan, 17 Simon Best, 18 Malcolm O’Kelly, 19 Neil Best, 20 Isaac Boss, 21 Paddy Wallace, 22 Gavin Duffy.

For me, the Reddan switch is a no-brainer. Stringer was awful in the last two matches, although he should probably still sit on the bench ahead of Boss. Flannery should always start ahead of Best, injuries or no injuries. Trimble should not weaken the team,  but could struggle against a French back three who seemed very impressive last night… It may well have been against an exhausted Namibian side, but could we beat said side? Could we even tire them out?

Your thoughts on Eddie’s changes? Too little, too late?

  1. Reddan was also an obvous one for me. Stringer has lost it (temporarily?) and I don’t rate Boss. Hopefully this will steady the ship at 9 and 10.

The big news, that I can’t understand is leaving Geordan Murphy out of the 22 completely? I think Eddie has handled his situation poorly and if I was Murphy I’d be fuming. Why bring him at all?

  2. yes i agree about murphy and alan quinlan too ! france will mess us up

  3. Not too late, perhaps too little. See France, they´ve changed about 12 players I believe.
Rugby is very much a mind game and a brainwash is what France needed.

  4. Happy to see Reddan in, but it’s a bit harsh to drop Stringer entirely. I’d still rate him over Boss. Very tough on Murphy too; I’m delighted to see Duffy in with a shout but I fail to see how shuffling the bench is going to save our necks.

All that said, it looks like there is a more fundamental problem with the squad at the moment than just the choice of initial line out. Here’s hoping this will be enough to shake things up.

  5. good to see some changes in the squad…big game needs big decisions and hopefully reddan will deliver!

the change will also leave france wondering what kind of game he will play, hopefully more running and expansive play! exciting!

  6. Bordeaux saturday night, after the game.It was just sheer relief that we all went mad and got whatever we could down our necks, just a great night with hopefully nobody hurt, although the french couple in the car outside the connamara with the giant green, white.and gold completly over the car and with two leprechauns in the back and another sprawled on the bonnet were totally frightened out of their wits and when the car was uncovered nearly had some of our boys.Young peter in the kilt and the celtic top kept us roaring with the sleeping frenchman and the bed he made for him out of empty pizza boxes, as i say good luck to us all for friday as we all know we need it.PS i was the boy with the pine bench all over the town giving everyone a wee rest.Met about 6 georgia players who gave us at least 10 minutes of their time, photos and all. cheers
