News Round-up, 07 September

So here we are then. The day has arrived, and the 2007 World Cup is about to get underway. There are several previews available online (here’s the BBC one, chosen at random), and nearly all the main newspapers have printed special guides to the tournament. I got the Irish Times one yesterday and had a quick look at it. It’s a shame that they lock their online content away under a subscription.

All Black ligind Zinzan Brook opined in an interview with the official RWC site that Samoa could cause an upset in Group A by beating England. Injuries to some key Samoan players have caused him to row back from that position subsequently in his BBC column. Zz is also the winner of today’s “Well, He Would Say That, Wouldn’t He?” award by predicting the New Zealand will win the World Cup.

Eddie O’Sullivan calls the opener for the host nation (RTÉ), while Brendan Gallagher in the Telegraph does an in-depth preview.

Staying with Pool D, Planet Rugby offers a preview of the Group of Death.

The IRFU site has quotes from Brian O’Driscoll, and have also launched a new microsite, will plenty of multimedia content.

Wednesday’s Gift Grub on Today FM (link to downloadable audio file at was excellent and concerned a subject discussed here last week – players being signed up to endorse products.
