News Round-up, 03 September

Busy, busy today, so this has to be short and to the point!

France name team to face Argies in opening match.

All Blacks get a raucous welcome in Marseille (Planet Rugby)

Predictions from the England camp galore today – Lawrence Dallaglio believes that England have a credible chance of successfully defending their title. Andy Robinson says they will definitely make it to the semi-finals, while Phil Vickery believes that the reigning champions “can upset the odds and make a major impact.” (All Planet Rugby.)

Eddie Butler in the Observer hedges his bets a bit and calls it four ways – the Tri-Nations nations and France. He examines New Zealand’s chances and concludes that the one team that could land a sucker punch on the All Blacks and knock them out is…wait for it…Ireland!!

OK, so he isn’t in the starting 15 for Friday, but he seems to be everywhere else these days – Monsieur Homme de Caverne lui-meme, Sebastien Chabal. He might renew his acquaintance with Paul O’Connell in the Ireland-France match on 21 September. Here is how our Paul welcomed him to Thomond Park in 2006 when Munster hosted Sale in the pool stages of the Heineken Cup.
