News Round-up, 01 September

The rumour turned out to be true! All Black back Doug Howlett has signed for Munster, and will join the province on 1 January 2008, subject to a medical and the necessary work permit. (Munster Rugby) This is excellent news for Munster fans, and we hope that Doug’s try-scoring habit will bear much fruit during his career at Munster.

Aussie captain Stirling Mortlock is reported to be suffering from a back injury which could curtail his involvement in the World Cup. (BBC)

Brian Ashton and Lawrence Dallaglio both insist that England are in a position to make a credible defence of their World title. Guardian

Mick Cleary, in his blog in the Telegraph, looks forward to ITV’s coverage of the World Cup (not in any sense of eager anticipation, but instead predicting how it might pan out.)
