If I was a betting man …

From time to time I have been known to throw a fiver or two the way of a turf accountant but I’ve never gotten much back. If I was a betting man … and decided I wanted to bet on the upcoming Rugby World Cup, here are a few (non-official) wagers you might consider throwing a few bob at …

First off, it seems there’s no point in backing the All Blacks – despite their tendency to bottle it in the last few stages of each tournament since they won it in 1987, they are only available at a miserly 4 – 7 on !  It must be all that pressure the RWAGs have them under …

As for winning the tournament outright, South Africa are 11 -2, France are 8 -1 with Ireland 16 – 1.

If I had a spare fiver, I’d back : Australia @ 9 – 1

Looking closer to home, there are innumerable wagers one can place on the men in green … will Paul O’Connell get sin-binned in the first match ? Will there be an Irishman sent off against Argentina ? What colour shorts will Tonga wear … the list goes on …but …

If I had a spare fiver, I’d back :

Ireland to reach semi-final @ 11 – 4
Girvan Dempsey to be our top try scorer @ 16 – 1
Brian Habana to be tournaments top try scorer @ 14 – 1

That’s if I was a betting man …

  1. When it comes to betting on world cup rugby, I will be voting with my head and keeping away from the Irish to win it! There are some very interesting odds out there at the moment though. A few suggestions:

Betting w/o New Zealand – France @ 3/1 are too much of a good thing with home support.

Top try scorer – looking for a bit of value here. Stirling Mortlock @ 66/1 is absolutely ridiculous especially after the form shown in the tri-nations.

Top Irish try scorer – Brian Carney @ 10/1. Bit of a risk? Don’t think so. He will get game time against the group minnows and he is our most clinical finisher. Just looks at his stats from his Rugby League days.

    Good luck!!

  2. Munstermad, just who is offering 66/1 on Mortlock? That is action that just should not be missed out on.

  3. johncav – check out the link below. Price still available at Paddy Power, Ladbrokes, VC Bet. Get on quick as this price won’t last!
